Bangkok Flooding Disrupts Freight and Transport Links

Severe flooding in Bangkok and surrounding areas has disrupted transport networks, creating challenges for sea and air freight shipments moving through Thailand.

Torrential rainfall has inundated roads, homes and businesses across the capital since the weekend, prompting authorities to declare disaster areas and announce special public holidays on 28–29 September in Bangkok and three neighbouring provinces. Flooded roads and difficulties reaching workplaces have interrupted normal business activity.

For sea freight, disruption is affecting road access, container movements and rail connections between Lat Krabang inland container depot and Laem Chabang Port. Longer collection, delivery, terminal gate-in and empty-container return times are expected, potentially affecting export connections and the onward movement of imports.

No confirmed flood-related closure of Bangkok Port or Laem Chabang has been identified in the reports reviewed. However, difficulties moving containers between terminals, depots and customer premises has delayed many shipments even where quayside operations continue.

Air freight connections has also been impacted by the flooding. Bangkok’s main airports have remained open, but flooding has prevented staff from reaching work and disrupted ground handling at Suvarnabhumi, contributing to widespread flight cancellations and delays.

Floodwaters are now starting to recede, offering some relief. Authorities expect drainage to take another two to three days, provided no further rain falls, although transport disruption could persist during recovery.
