Major Chinese Ports Facing Congestion Related Delays

Shipping operations across China are being affected by serious congestion following repeated storm disruption and increased peak-season demand.

Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian and Shekou are currently among the most heavily impacted ports. Growing backlogs have led to vessel queues, omitted port calls, restricted terminal receiving windows and difficulties securing equipment in some locations.

Conditions are particularly challenging in Shanghai, where vessels are waiting more than five days in some cases. Selected carrier services have responded by removing Shanghai from their scheduled rotations. Terminals are also limiting the acceptance of export containers to vessels departing within the following two or three days, placing further pressure on haulage and delivery planning.

At Ningbo, recent vessel delays have averaged approximately three to four days. Export gate controls remain in operation, with terminals generally accepting containers no earlier than three days before the intended sailing.

Yantian and Shekou are also facing considerable pressure. Average waiting times have reached four to five days over the past week, although export gate bookings are currently available for vessels sailing within seven days.

The consequences for customers may include longer transit times, cargo being rolled or short-shipped, equipment shortages and changes to schedules at limited notice. Even after weather conditions improve and terminals return to full productivity, accumulated cargo volumes mean delays may continue while the backlogs are cleared.

Global Logistics Freight Solutions recommends placing bookings as early as possible and building additional time into supply chain plans. Where cargo is particularly urgent, customers should contact our team to discuss whether alternative routing options may be available.

We are monitoring port conditions and carrier schedules closely with our partners across China and will continue working to minimise disruption wherever possible.
